Poetry Beats the Auckland Streets

The Literatti, a group of Auckland’s leading performance poets, are changing the world one word at a time.Saturday the 24th of September saw The Literatti taking poetry to the streets for 100 Thousand Poets for Change, the biggest poetry event in history. As part of the global movement made up of over 700 events in 550 cities across 95 countries, The Literatti chalked messages of hope and protest through central Auckland.

The Literatti have been working on reTHiNK Possible Worlds since May when they were awarded a reTHiNK Grant to use creativity in all its forms to change the way the Auckland public thinks about mental health. Creative director and grant recipient Christian Jensen says, “When we heard of 100 Thousand Poets for Change, we couldn’t wait to add the reTHiNK Possible Worlds message to the global mix of voices. A guerrilla-style poetry event seemed the ideal way to bring it to the street in a way that would get the public interacting with what we are saying.”

Get Involved in the Next Street Art Event

September 21st, 2011

The reTHiNK Possible Worlds crew have teamed up with The Guerrilla Poets again!  This time, they are adding their message to a global event called 100 Thousand Poets For Change – the largest poetry event in history. They’ll be taking poetry to the streets of central Auckland and everyone is invited to take part.

Meet at Myers Park by the children’s playground at midday on Saturday the 24th of September.

Take part in chalking a trail of poetry and messages for positive change from Myers Park to Albert Park, where the group will attempt to completely fill in the area around the fountain with poetry and art to inspire the public. Chalk is provided, so you only need to bring yourself and something to say. For those who don’t feel like chalking, a number of poetry flags and banners have been made so that anyone can take part.

Photographs from the event will be uploaded to the event’s section on the official 100 Thousand Poets for Change website, which will be archived by Stanford University immediately following September 24th, as a historic record of the event. So not only is this an opportunity to share our perspectives for a better world with the foot-traffic in Auckland on Saturday, it’s also an opportunity to share our perspectives with the rest of the globe.

Making Poetry Dance

Febe (Sarah) Holmes from Etched Dance Productions reflects on the process of creating dance for the reTHiNK Possible Worlds show.

* * *

So far we have had a lot of fun working collaboratively with the poets and musicians of The Literatti for the reTHiNK Possible Worlds project. We have been with them all through-out their creative processes, seeing and feeling how each piece changes and progresses from its starting point.

I think this is a really great way to work. It makes it easier for us as dancers to have more of an understanding of their works and so we are able to create movement that hopefully compliments and expresses the ideas and feelings behind each poem. It’s also allowed the poets to get a sense of where we are going with the dance interpretation and it’s been great to see some of the poets start picking up on our movements in their own performances. It’s not often that we get to work in such a two-way relationship with our source of inspiration. …
